Now, is it really fair that Blockbuster has so many problems competing with Netflix? Technically speaking, their online DVD rental services cost about the same amount, movies are delivered in on the same amount of time, and Blockbuster actually rents games online in addition to their DVD's which Netflix won't. Going down the line comparing Netflix vs. Blockbuster, it looks like Blockbuster needs to be doing extremely well.
Fair or otherwise not, Netflix has a serious edge on Blockbuster. Their member base is at greater than 3 million subscribers, and they're about to one-up your competitors in a fantastic way: movies delivered overnight directly to a box attached with your television.
VP of original programming, Eric Besner revealed the master plan, noting that this business model are still being ironed out however, many things are confident. One in the "convinced" things will be the way that this Netflix movie set-top box works (reportedly - it isn't really been released yet).
Members continues to pay a flat fee for their subscription service in substitution for movies that are downloaded to their home television. The fee for current services starts at $5.99, and increases depending on the plan you choose - the most premium plan lets you take out an infinite number of movies each and every month.
Instead of waiting the 3-5 days on a DVD to come in the mail, though, Netflix users have even more ease. The movies in your queue (approximately the number allowed through your subscription plan) are downloaded overnight for the Netflix box and many types of you have to do is pick which movie you wish to watch through the list plugged straight into your TV.
No more walking towards the mailbox to post and return your DVDs - that is really cool itself - you will now be able to plop right down on your couch and enjoy all the movie goodness. When you're carried out with a movie, you only add a new one for the online queue at the Netflix website as you do today.
A box-top model isn't a revolutionary concept, by any means, but it is certainly a major step towards changing the way that Americans rent, view, and purchase their movies along with other entertainment.
Recently Nielsen Analytics performed a panel survey that studied how the availability of ABC TV shows on iTunes affected the crowd of shows on ABC. Larry Gerbrandt, senior VP and general manager of Nielsen Analytics, declared being capable to download the shows has definitely not hurt ABC's market share - actually, they're receiving targeted viewers because of their shows than in the past.
Disney senior VP and general manager of PayTV, Dan Cohen, declared they clocked 11 million streams (or views) of the four ABC shows it put online in May. One month, eleven million users. That's amazing for an experiment, also it goes towards boosting Netflix's confidence inside their new business idea. Online Movie Rental Competition on the Horizon Fantastic idea you aren't, though, Netflix is gonna face some serious competition and may want to get this show while travelling quickly. The company is now estimating that this box movie service needs to be available by the end of the year - but following closely on the heels are Internet giants Amazon and YouTube.
Right now, there is something of an Internet Urban Legend happening about Amazon and what is being referred to as the "Unbox". Documents are quickly papering the digital walls indicating that Amazon is actually comparatively close to unveiling Amazon Unbox Video and fiercely take on YouTube, Grouper, Google Video and ' you guessed it, Netflix.
What will Unbox do?
Amazon customers will be capable to purchase or rent videos, TV shows, news programs, sports programs and full films - and they're going to be in a position to download their purchase immediately for their computers.
Now, don't forget the Internet Urban Legend thing I mentioned, because Amazon is remaining officially silent about the entire project ' very silent. However, leaked documents (the fuel for the beautiful little urban legend) claim that Amazon promises to charge about $2 for tv programs and right under $11 for films.
Bear Stearns' analyst Robert Peck has been quoted as praoclaiming that "It appears Amazon is near this long-awaited service, that ought to boost margins whether it gains traction and may ultimately replace any concept of a Netflix type business."
Ohhhh boy so things are getting fun now! Not only is Blockbuster shuddering with the news that Netflix might be releasing a TV set top box that can download movies overnight, but Netflix themselves might be shuddering on the prospect of Amazon hopping about the legal movie downloads bandwagon.
One from the main selling points that Amazon (maybe!) offers using Unbox over Netflix is they only charge customers once they actually order a video. Netflix, on the other hand, is constantly on the charge a flat subscription fee it doesn't matter how quickly their clients can return movies via post ' so weeks can go by between getting a motion picture, watching it, and returning it. But the customer continues to be charged - while using Unbox, the client wouldn't be.
Since neither of such services have been released yet, speculation will continue to grow until something official is seen. With the fact that
Hollywood studios are growing at ease download distribution (they're getting great with all the piracy controls), services honestly are likely to become incredibly well-liked. Downloads create massive savings for movie producers who don't have to spend the fees for physical DVD goods and rental sites like Netflix don't have to figure inside cost of shipping.
It appears to be the world of entertainment is heating, and I'm happily experiencing and enjoying the show!
